Roy currently plays for the Brisbane Roar in the Hyundai A-league. Originally from the Republic of Ireland, Roy started his career with Coventry City in England. Roy returned to Ireland where he won the Eircom Premier League with Cork City in 2005.

Roy then moved to the English Premier League in 2007 when he joined Sunderland for a League of Ireland record transfer fee at that time.

Roy was also a winner in the Singapore League Cup winning the MVP award with DPMM FC in 2014. Roy has played in the Hyundai A-League since 2015 and won the award for the A-League goal of the year 2015-2016.

Roy has been capped by Ireland B and has played for Ireland at youth international levels.
